About

I have compassion for people trying to maneuver through life’s challenges and will walk alongside you during those struggles. With a gift for teaching and explaining things in practical ways, I combine biblical truths and evidence-based skills that can easily apply to everyday life. We practice the skills we learn in sessions and I will encourage you to continue to use these skills outside of sessions, which further increases your resiliency when future difficulties arise. We will talk about what is helpful and what is not working well so we can adjust the approach we take, ensuring your therapy experience is truly tailored to your needs.

My Goal as a Christian Counselor

My goal is to empower and equip you with skills to use so that you can live a healthier and happier life while developing a strong identity of who you are in Christ, discovering the purpose God has for you, and experiencing more fulfilment in your relationships. By taking the time in sessions to listen and fully understand what is going on, my aim is to work with you to formulate the most productive way forward.

What I Offer in Christian Counseling

I offer a welcoming, confidential space where you can feel comfortable knowing that anything can be discussed without feeling shame or judgement. Being able to talk about our greatest struggles with a trusted person is the beginning of understanding what we need to do to move toward healing and becoming all that God has designed us to be. We will walk through the process of learning about self, others, and the relationships we have and how to better maneuver roadblocks and difficulties when they arise, with God’s help and direction.

My Approach to Christian Counseling

My approach combines evidence-based therapies and biblical principles that can be applied to everyday life problems. You can expect counseling with me to be collaborative (we work together as a team) and active. We will work together to find solutions that fit your life and have lasting positive effects. Taking a life-application approach helps therapy fit each individual and encourages growth in all areas of life. Learning and then practicing these principles in real-life situations will help build hope and confidence that lead to lasting healing.

Biography

Qualifications & Experience

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Colorado State University, a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Bowie State University, Maryland, and a Doctor of Psychology degree in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University (Summa Cum Laude).

I have been working professionally in counseling since 2008 and have worked in numerous settings to include hospitals, public mental health, and private practice. I have worked in both outpatient and in-patient settings while having the pleasure to work with people of diverse populations and cultures.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas and Colorado, I have worked with a wide variety of people groups as well as life circumstances. I hold a Certificate in Addiction Counseling from Odyssey Training Center in Colorado and also passed the National Certification Exam for Addiction Counseling.

My Call to Christian Counseling

I have wanted to pursue a career in psychology ever since high school. At first, it fascinated me how much it could be applied to my own life. As I moved forward in my career, I found that we all have more in common than we have different, and those commonalities include life’s hardships and struggles as well as rejoicing with the wins. I have a deep compassion for people facing difficult challenges and believe that no one should be alone in their struggles. Therefore, I chose a career in counseling because I consider it a privilege to be invited to come alongside someone to help them live their best life.

More About Me/On a Personal Note

I have been married for 35 years and choose to spend as much of my free time as possible with my family. I have two adult daughters and am raising one of my granddaughters who has special needs. I love to do anything outdoors, such as hiking. Other hobbies include playing pickleball, singing karaoke, playing pool, and trying new foods. I also love to travel so I can experience firsthand another culture’s history, food, customs, language, music, etc. Additionally, I am also a big animal lover, so I can’t leave out spending time with my very clever dog, Wallace.

Behavioral and Chemical Addiction Counseling

I have specialized training and experience counseling clients from all walks of life who find themselves caught in the grip of addiction. There is hope to be free from addiction, whether the source of the addiction is behavioral (porn, gambling, social media, gaming, shopping, work) or chemical (drugs, alcohol). Together we will work through helping you identify sources of addictive behavior as well as learning skills to maintain recovery from addiction and an action plan to use when struggles come. I also have experience working with military personnel and veterans and can counsel according to their unique needs.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (including Sexual Abuse)

Traumatic experiences can create patterns within us that cause us to be “stuck” and can lead to feelings of shame, low self-esteem, and even not knowing why our brain and body are acting a certain way. We can work together building a relationship of trust where we can process traumatic issues and learn skills to manage your thoughts and your bodily reactions so that you can experience freedom. Being able to process traumatic experiences with me can help you build trust again in relationships and situations. This will help you engage again in life’s activities that being stuck in trauma has taken from you.

Anxiety

Anxiety can show itself in many forms (including worry, panic, perfectionism, and control issues). At times anxiety can feel crippling and can rob us of the things in life that we would most like to do. I can help teach skills that combat the thoughts and bodily reactions that are triggered when you experience anxiety. We will examine sources of anxiety and learn tools that will help decrease anxiety so that you can enjoy the life God has given you.

Family Therapy and Relationship Issues

Relationships with others can be very difficult to navigate for everyone. Relationships naturally go through struggles and transitions, but often people get caught in negative cycles that do not lead to a healthy relationship. Each person has wants, needs, and a different perspective on life, as well as dealing with issues related to our families that we grew up in. I conduct counseling with individuals, couples, and families going through those relationship struggles and transitions, as well as helping people work through issues related to their experiences in their family of origin. We are meant to be in relationships with others and when those relationships work, they can be the most fulfilling part of our lives.

Codependency and Self-Esteem Issues

Codependency is a term that has become very popular and there are various definitions that have been created to describe what it means. Codependency starts as a coping mechanism for a person to survive in dysfunctional circumstances. However, the adopted behaviors become counterproductive and can even continue a negative cycle of dysfunction. When I work with clients with codependency issues, we work to identify negative cycles and to increase self-esteem. Breaking the dysfunctional cycles also involves learning and practicing good personal boundaries. Setting personal boundaries creates trust and safety within our relationships and leads to more healthy interactions.
