  • Aging and Geriatric Issues

The aging process is something that we all hope to experience, but it can also come with a stigma, mental health risks, and loneliness. The perspective on aging has shifted to something often unhealthy in our current culture. But the way growing old was seen throughout history, in the Bible, and other cultures is different than how we think of aging in 21st-century Western culture.

Developing a fresh perspective on aging can encourage us and allow us to grow old gracefully and walk in faith and love.

  • Anger Management

Anger management refers to a process that can help people identify stressors. When it comes to anger management, people learn to stay calm by following a few steps. As a result, they may be able to handle tense situations in a constructive, positive manner.

Anger management is designed to reduce anger in a person. In addition to reducing anger’s emotional and physical arousal, it also reduces its physical manifestations. In general, it is impossible to avoid all anger-inducing people and environments. However, a person may learn to control their reactions and respond appropriately to social situations. You may find it helpful to seek the support of a mental health professional in this process.

“Rage, persistent anger, or angry outbursts can have detrimental consequences for physical health, quality of life, and relationships,” says Erin Engle, PsyD, a psychologist at Columbia University Medical Centre.

“Anger management is an approach designed to help you manage the emotional and physiological arousal that accompanies anger. As it’s often not possible to change the circumstances or people that elicit anger, anger management can help you recognize your triggers for anger and learn to cope with them more effectively,” explains Engle.

  • Chemical Dependency

Do you or a loved one struggle with addiction to a chemical substance? An estimated 19.7 million Americans struggle with chemical dependency, based on the latest survey numbers from 2017. Many people are struggling with these problems after battling challenges related to the pandemic.

Chemical dependency can be related to alcohol or drug use. About three-quarters of substance addictions are to alcohol, with the remainder being to subscription or illicit drugs. Once someone is addicted to these substances, their brain chemistry is altered, and professional help is often needed for recovery.

There is hope for you or your loved one if chemical dependency has taken hold in your life. The chance of relapse is high if one attempts to get free of the addiction on their own. However, with the help of trained counselors, you can overcome the addiction. The counselors at our offices have years of experience leading addicts from darkness into the light of Christ, with compassion and understanding.

  • Marriage Counseling

You’ve probably heard the statistic that half of all marriages end in divorce. While this is true in the United States, the good news is that this statistic has not increased at all over the past fifty years, and there are ways to prevent divorce and heal your marriage. Keep reading to learn more.

While the divorce rate is not increasing, the number of people who are getting married is declining. Also, remarriage is on the rise. These statistics point to increasing complexity in the relationship landscape today.
The most common reason people report marrying is for love. The most common reasons for divorce are infidelity, financial difficulties, and poor communication.

No matter what cultural landscape surrounds marriage, no one can deny that it is one of the most important human relationships that will ever exist. The Bible has a lot to say about marriage, and God created this relationship, so we know that he provides wisdom and help in his Word. Christian marriage counseling in Texas is meant to take the wisdom of God’s Word and provide a path forward for marriages to heal and flourish.

  • Codependency

Codependency describes the behavior of a person in a relationship who strives to be the people pleaser. Their actions and attitudes reflect the need to help others in order to validate who they are as a person. They seek approval or even disapproval from others. They want to be the attention of others’ affections whether it is good or bad.

These behaviors tend to manifest in relationships that are unhealthy or unbalanced. The codependent person strives to save others from themselves but fails to understand who they are and what they need. This can be a destructive force in relationships. Texas Christian Counseling can help you identify this behavior and work toward creating a healthier you for yourself and those you love.

  • Abandonment and Neglect

The phrase “abandonment issues” might sound like a buzzword or a way to dismiss someone’s feelings. “She has abandonment issues” can be used as shorthand for implying that someone is clingy or needy. But the truth is that abandonment issues are real and can often stem from problems during childhood, loss, trauma, or all of the above. Sometimes, abandonment issues are the result of genetic factors and/or an individual’s brain chemistry.

Deep down, abandonment issues involve a fear of loneliness. In other words, abandonment issues mean struggling to function optimally in relationships due to anxiety about being alone and/or abandoned.

“Abandonment issues happen when a parent or caregiver does not provide the child with consistent warm or attentive interactions, leaving them feeling chronic stress and fear.” (WebMD)

Abandonment issues are a type of anxiety, and they are treatable. It’s completely possible to address the fear of abandonment and how it impacts your relationships and functioning. If you struggle with this fear, please know that you can learn healthier ways of interacting in relationships, and even how to form secure attachments with others.

Keep reading to find out how Christian counseling for abandonment issues can help you heal and thrive.

  • ADHD

If you suspect that you or a loved one might have ADHD, taking a step toward treatment can start by learning more about its symptoms. ADHD symptoms can be confusing, and it can be difficult to know whether the symptoms point to ADHD or something else, like Internet addiction or an underlying physical cause.

Struggles with attention can have numerous causes, and if ADHD is the cause, it is treatable. It’s important to know symptoms so that you can begin to get to the root of what is impacting your (or your child’s) functioning. Keep reading to learn more about ADHD symptoms and how Christian counseling can help you manage ADHD symptoms and get back to living life on your terms.

  • Counseling for Children

Our children are precious to us, and safeguarding their well-being is the concern of every parent and caregiver. While our deepest desires would be for our child to go through life without experiencing hardship, pain, setbacks, and challenges, unfortunately, that just isn’t the reality. Little children are subject to illness and discomfort just as we are, and at times they need professional help to overcome some of the challenges they face.

  • Counseling for Teens

Adolescence is a difficult time for everyone. Most adults don’t look back on their teen years and think, Wow, that was so easy and effortless. Everything fell into place and all those changes were no big deal.

Instead, this whirlwind season of transition and growing up is like no other time of life. Everything shifts, relationships change, the future looms with promises and challenges, and responsibilities increase for both teens and their parents.

In addition to all the changes that are normal during this stage of development, adolescents also experience mental health problems or concerns at relatively high rates. A 2018 American Psychological Association survey found that teens had higher rates of anxiety, depression, and overall poor mental health than any other age group, and other surveys seem to corroborate this finding. Other common struggles for teens include eating disorders, substance use disorders, behavioral disorders, ADHD, and more.

Even though teens are learning to communicate more like adults, it can still be hard to connect with them and encourage them to open up about any struggles they’re having.

During adolescence, the focus naturally shifts to the individual and their peers instead of being as parent-focused as before. So, while parents still play an incredibly important role in the life of an adolescent, the relationship does change.

Finding support, whether as the parent or guardian of a teen or a young person yourself, can be essential to fostering healthy development and relationships during this pivotal time of life.

  • Eating Disorders

Close to 29 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder during their lifetime, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Eating Disorders. Getting help is critical, as eating disorders are one of the deadliest mental health disorders. Christian counseling for eating disorders is an excellent source of help.

According to Scripture, the body is considered a temple of the Holy Spirit. That is easy to forget with the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Sometimes stress, expectations, trauma, genetics, and other factors contribute to the development of eating disorders. As you continue the behavior, you might feel as if you are stuck in a tunnel that keeps getting narrower until you can no longer see the light at the end. But there is help!

At Texas Christian Counseling, we specialize in treating eating disorders with evidence-backed psychology methods combined with the grace of Jesus Christ. God created you, and it is time for you to discover the freedom, healing, confidence, comfort, and courage found in Jesus.

  • EMDR Treatment

EMDR Treatment: What It Is And How It Works

    EMDR Treatment Overview

EMDR (eye movement desensitization therapy) is a treatment modality that helps you process and heal from past experiences that are affecting your mental health and well-being. Although it is best known for treating mental health disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), its use has expanded to include a wide range of other conditions such as anxiety, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, addiction, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and personality disorders as well.

Unlike traditional psychotherapy, EMDR treatment does not require talking about distressing events in detail. Rather, it focuses on reprocessing traumatic memories that have gotten stuck in the emotional center of the brain instead of being processed and released. It uses bilateral stimulation such as guided side-to-side eye movements to change the way these memories are stored, thus reducing their vividness, and kick-starting your brain’s natural healing and recovery process.

The experience of grief is universal. Every human has experienced some sort of loss, yet the ways in which individuals process their grief widely vary. At any given point, your life is touched by grief, whether it is your own grief or you are walking alongside someone who is grieving. Being intentional about understanding common ways grief can show up and be processed is essential.

As C.S. Lewis poignantly reflected in A Grief Observed, ““I thought I could describe a state; make a map of sorrow. Sorrow, however, turns out to be not a state but a process” (Lewis, 1961). This article seeks to give an overview of the grieving process, including the stages and manners in which a person may experience and process grief.

    Barriers to Individual Counseling

There are many reasons why people delay going to counseling. In some circles, seeking mental health help still carries a stigma, whether spoken or unspoken.

Counseling takes time, and life is busy. It can even seem selfish, to you or people around you, to invest time into addressing your mental and emotional well-being.

The more overwhelmed you are, the more you give to others, and the more you’re trying to find peace and rise above life’s difficulties, paradoxically, the more you might feel guilty or uncertain about seeking counseling.

At Texas Christian Counseling, we understand that there are many potential barriers to seeking individual Christian counseling for mental and/or emotional health concerns, relationship issues, and more. But we also firmly believe that counseling is worth it and can make a huge difference in your life.

No matter what you’re facing, there is hope through Christ and the provision he offers for our needs. Counseling can be one part of that provision.

  • OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder that is chronic, long-lasting, but treatable. People with this disorder experience constant fearful thoughts (obsessions), which cause them to develop ritualistic behaviors (compulsions) to cope with the fears. For example, a person may have a crippling fear of germs and disease, resulting in the compulsion to wash their hands every ten minutes throughout the day. Many of the obsessive fears experienced with OCD are illogical, but can only be soothed or controlled with compulsive behaviors.

OCD is a common disorder affecting men and women. It is usually first detectable between the ages of 19 and 35, however there are cases of it first being seen in preteens and middle-aged people. There are degrees of intensity with OCD, and it can be debilitating. It is treatable with therapy, medication, and group support and will not improve or lessen in intensity without treatment.

  • Premarital Counseling

When you’re engaged to be married, sometimes preparing for the wedding takes precedence over preparing for the marriage. After all, you’re on a time schedule, you have people depending on you, and there’s a lot to coordinate. You also have to consider the logistics of moving in together, planning a honeymoon, combining finances, etc.

It can all be a bit overwhelming, and it’s easy to sweep relationship issues or preparation for marriage itself under the rug, thinking you can deal with those things once the planning and preparation has settled down a little.

But, all of this preparation and busyness is exactly why premarital counseling is so worth it! It’s easy to let intentionality about the relationship itself fall by the wayside in the midst of practicality. Setting aside time to meet with a counselor together can help you lay the groundwork for a happy and successful beginning to your marriage.

Let’s talk about why Christian counseling for premarital issues is so important, and how it can help you prepare for a healthy and happy future together.
