What types of relationships do you provide relationship counseling for?

How can we know if we need relationship counseling?

Following are some common signs that indicate you could benefit from counseling for relationship issues: 

  • Communication issues. You do not communicate well with one another. Your conversations are full of criticism, contempt, and/or defensiveness, and you tend to shut each other down.
  • Constant bickering and arguing. You keep arguing about the same thing over and over again without finding a resolution, and you feel unheard or misunderstood.
  • Trust issues. It is difficult to feel loved and fulfilled in a relationship when there is a lack of trust.
  • Intimacy issues. You feel like the spark is gone from your relationship and the bond you once had has weakened. Even though the honeymoon phase of a relationship doesn’t last forever, it is important to feel physically and emotionally connected to each other.
  • You have experienced a major life change. Whether it’s a financial setback, a new baby, a health crisis, or a death in the family, major life changes can alter the dynamics of your relationship, increase stress, and weaken the bond between you.

When is the best time to go for relationship counseling? Should we wait until we’re having a crisis?

At Texas Christian Counseling, counseling for relationship issues should not be an emergency measure. Don’t wait until you’re ready to break up. Ideally, the best time to go is when differences first arise. If you tackle them in the early stages, you have a much better chance of successfully working through them and it can help you avoid larger issues down the road.

It is never too late to seek help for a troubled relationship, provided you and your loved one are both willing to actively participate in the intervention. According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 93% of patients reported being able to deal more effectively with their marital problems after receiving counseling.
