Caregiver Fatigue: Help When You Have No Support

Individual Counseling

Being a caregiver can be a taxing experience under the best conditions, but caregiver fatigue is even more prevalent if you don’t have a support system. Here are some ideas on how to avoid caregiver fatigue and care for yourself when you don’t have anyone else to lean on for support.

Make the environment comfortable for yourself

If you focus heavily on making the person you’re caring for comfortable, you can easily overlook ways to create a comfortable environment for yourself. As a sole caregiver, you likely spend a lot of time in the immediate area of the person in need of care. Try to make this environment comfortable for yourself as well.

  • Set up a comfortable chair that you can relax in while you visit with your loved one.
  • Add a warm comforter or a soft pillow to make it cozier.
  • Fill the room with things you love, such as a vase of fresh flowers (assuming no one is allergic) or beautiful images.
  • Play music softly in the background as you perform your caregiving duties.

Do what you can to make yourself comfortable in the space where you are working if it doesn’t pose a risk for the person who is receiving care.

Incorporate your hobbies

Sometimes caregivers must abandon their hobbies due to a lack of free time. Consider introducing the person you are caring for to some of your hobbies. Not only will it give them a chance to be engaged in something new, but it will also allow you to enjoy your favorite hobby.

Caregiver Fatigue: Help When You Have No SupportFor example, if you love drawing, gather art supplies for both you and the care recipient and practice drawing together. Set up a still life display on a nearby table or watch a step-by-step drawing tutorial on the internet. If you enjoy learning a new language, try learning one together with the person receiving care. Some apps will guide you through language study, or you can go to the library for resources.

Talk to a therapist to avoid caregiver fatigue

Talking with a professional therapist can be incredibly beneficial for all caregivers, but it’s essential for sole caregivers. The weight of caregiving responsibilities and emotions associated with it can take its toll on your mental and emotional health. This can lead to caregiver fatigue.

Having a therapist to talk to provides a safe and supportive space to process all the challenges and complex emotions you must deal with as a caregiver. A therapist can help you identify your own needs, implement boundaries, and encourage self-care practices. Prioritize your well-being to be a supportive caregiver while still maintaining your own mental and emotional health.

It’s important to carve out time to visit a therapist, even if you don’t feel you have the time to spare. If you can’t find someone to watch your loved one, try online therapy. Many professional therapists talk with clients via online video platforms and are available at hours that are convenient, even for those with unconventional schedules.

Ask the care recipient for help

Caregiver Fatigue: Help When You Have No Support 1Even if the person you are caring for is bedridden, they may be able to help you with your daily chores. Ask your loved one to match socks or fold laundry. Many bedridden people can help sort mail, write grocery lists, take care of household plants, order supplies online, and make appointments. Your loved one may be able to help with tech support or even with organizing digital photos.

Understand your loved one’s abilities and limitations, then choose activities that suit them while also easing your duties. Consider tasks that align with their interests and capabilities so they can feel successful and fulfilled. Finding ways for them to assist benefits both of you.

Make the most of technology

Using technology to your advantage, especially when you are a sole caregiver, is vital. Consider using medication management apps that help organize medication schedules and set reminders for doses. This makes it easier to keep track of things.

The person in your care might also benefit from using health monitoring devices. Wearable devices such as smartwatches or health trackers can monitor vital signs, activity levels, and sleep patterns remotely. This will give you more accurate information to share with healthcare providers and help you easily monitor health trends.

Consider using a GPS tracking device or location-based app to monitor the whereabouts of the care recipient. This is especially important for those who are prone to wandering or getting lost. Remote monitoring cameras are often equipped with live streaming, motion detection, and two-way audio communication. This allows caregivers the ability to monitor patients remotely. Many devices can also detect falls or alert caregivers to emergencies.

Acquire the right equipment to reduce caregiver fatigue

Talk with the care recipient’s health care team about obtaining equipment that could make your job as a caregiver easier. Lift chairs or patient lifts can help you safely and more easily move an immobile person. An adjustable bed, overbed table, and bedside commode might also make caregiving tasks easier.

You may also want to ask the health care provider if a personal emergency response system would be right for your loved one. Other equipment to consider is an adjustable recliner, ramps for easy access into and around the living space, and adaptive utensils or eating aids.

Caregiver Fatigue: Help When You Have No Support 2Be sure to have the proper personal equipment for yourself. Invest in a comfortable pair of shoes. Be sure to find a pair that offers support for long periods of standing and walking. An anti-fatigue mat can be placed in areas where you stand for long periods of time to help reduce discomfort. Wrist supports can help alleviate wrist pain and strain, especially when doing repetitive motions, which often accompany caregiving duties.

Pray and praise

You have an ever-present help in times of need, even when you don’t have a physical support system. If you feel overwhelmed, powerless, and alone, remember that God is always with you. Pray while you are performing your daily caregiving tasks. God wants to connect with you and help you with your needs. He will provide you with hope, comfort, and strength.

Play praise music to remind you of where your help comes from. Create a playlist of all your favorite uplifting songs and play it while you perform your caregiving duties. Praise music helps you focus on the Lord and fills you with encouraging words.

You can even write uplifting Bible verses onto index cards and place them in areas that you see regularly. Glance at these encouraging words whenever you can to remind yourself that God loves you. Even in your darkest and loneliest moments, know that God loves you and will never forsake you.

Do it for the glory of God

Sometimes caregiving can be a thankless job. The attitude of your loved one can influence how you view yourself. If your care recipient does not show gratitude, you may feel as if you are failing, even if you are giving them excellent care. Give your role as caregiver to God and let Him use it for His glory. You may not get properly thanked by the person you are caring for, but remember that God sees your sacrifice.

When you start to feel underappreciated, remember why you chose to be a caregiver. Your motivation might have come from a place of compassion and love, rather than a need for appreciation. Try to understand why the care recipient might not express gratitude. They are dealing with their own struggles, pain, and loss of independence. Do your best for the glory of God, even if you feel underappreciated by the person in your care.

Help When You Have No Support

Being a caregiver without a support system presents unique challenges and can leave you feeling overwhelmed and isolated. In the absence of a traditional network of support, it is essential for you to recognize your own value and protect your own health and well-being. Connect with a Christian counselor from this office to get the support you need to avoid caregiver fatigue.
