New Women’s Insecurities Brought About by the Digital Era

Individual CounselingWomen’s Issues

As long as we can remember, women have had to face insurmountable hurdles and overcome great impediments that have contributed to women’s insecurities for centuries.

Women across the world have had to fight for basic human rights such as voting, owning property, and walking without an escort. Sadly, some of our fellow women are still fighting for these rights in other parts of the world to this day.

However, the 21st century has generally brought about a significant reduction in some of these practices against women. Many traditional practices and beliefs that traditionally contributed to women’s insecurities, like gender bias, workplace inequalities, gender-based violence, and social stigmas, were issues modern women thought were behind us.

Like us if you are enjoying this content.

But just when women had begun to walk in light of this progress, a new and unexpected challenge has emerged, reviving women’s struggles with insecurities yet again.

The Rise of the Digital Era

The digital era, also known as the Digital Revolution or Information Age, began in the mid-twentieth century. It has been marked by the transition from traditional industries to an economy centered on information technology. This has had a profound impact on women, bringing both opportunities and challenges.

Opportunities the digital world has opened for women include:

Economic Empowerment Digital technologies have opened new job opportunities, particularly in tech and remote work, allowing women to balance work and family responsibilities more effectively.

Education and Skills Development Online learning platforms have made education more accessible, enabling women to acquire new skills and advance their careers.

New Women’s Insecurities Brought About by the Digital EraEntrepreneurship The internet has provided a platform for women entrepreneurs to start and grow businesses, reaching global markets with minimal investment.

Advocacy and Activism Social media and digital tools have empowered women to advocate for their rights, raise awareness about gender issues, and mobilize support for social causes.

While the opportunities are immense, the tech era has also introduced new insecurities for women, impacting various aspects of their lives. From biased algorithms to enhanced cybersecurity threats and everything in between, this whole new era is piling on a new set of pressure for women than ever before.

Unexpected Tech-Related Concerns that are Increasing Women’s Insecurities

AI and Algorithm Biases There is already evidence that many of the AI technologies and algorithms being developed can perpetuate gender bias and negative stereotyping. When this technology is applied to hiring processes, women have unfortunately fallen short.

Some studies have shown that job hiring algorithms favor men for technical roles while steering women toward positions requiring skills that are typically lower paid. These job imbalances can make women undervalued or unfairly judged based on biased data.

The Imposter Phenomenon A feeling of not belonging is a common experience for women when it comes to the tech industry. It has been exacerbated by the industry’s gender imbalance, the fast-paced nature of the tech industry, and the high visibility of male tech achievements while female achievements are suppressed.

For example, the gross underrepresentation in tech leadership roles has left many feeling like they aren’t as adequate or competent as their peers in tech.

New Women’s Insecurities Brought About by the Digital Era 1Rise of Cybersecurity Threats Statistically, women have been targeted more aggressively in cyberattacks such as deepfakes, doxxing, and online harassment. Women who experience online humiliation and cyberbullying can have a pervasive sense of insecurity and fear about their online presence and suffer significant emotional distress, anxiety, and even PTSD.

How Tech-Related Insecurities in Women Manifest

  • Body Image Issues
  • Increased Privacy Concerns
  • Social Isolation
  • Overcompensation
  • Self-Doubt
  • Reluctance to Speak Up

The prevalence of social media platforms has amplified unrealistic beauty standards. Women often feel pressured to conform to these ideals, leading to issues like body dysmorphia, low self-esteem, vulnerability, and fear. To counteract their insecurities, some women may overcompensate by working excessively hard, striving for perfection, or taking on more responsibilities than necessary.

Women in tech may also frequently question their skills and knowledge, feeling as if they aren’t as competent as their male counterparts. This often leads to reluctance to take on challenging projects or apply for leadership roles.

The digital age has blurred the lines between work and personal life, making it challenging for women to maintain a healthy work-life balance, resulting in increased stress and burnout.

All these new women’s insecurities in the digital world highlight the need for greater understanding, dialogue, and resources to help women navigate the digital landscape confidently and safely. There is a need for more inclusive practices and support systems in the tech industry to help women feel secure and valued.

Possible Strategies for Women to Overcome Tech-Based Insecurities

New Women’s Insecurities Brought About by the Digital Era 2Maintaining work-life balance in the digital age can be challenging, but there are several effective strategies to help manage. Setting clear boundaries, like specific work hours, ensures that everyone in your life knows and respects your personal time.

Other ways to help navigate the complexities of the digital age while maintaining a healthy work-life balance include:

  • Prioritizing ourselves and making time for activities that promote our well-being, such as exercise, cherished hobbies, and relaxation. Regular breaks and physical activity can help mitigate the effects of digital overload.
  • Negotiating flexible work arrangements that suit us as women and mothers and can allow a balance between work and personal commitments. Demanding validation of our unique needs as women, such as flexible hours or remote work options, is not a sign of weakness but rather empowerment.
  • Learning how to use technology mindfully by leveraging productivity tools to manage our time effectively and eliminate the potential for digital distractions. A good tip is to set specific times to check messages, emails, and social pages to avoid constant interruptions.
  • Scheduling regular times for digital detox is crucial to help us as women unwind and unplug from social and work-related technology. This can help to recharge and maintain a healthy balance between being always on and having personal peace of mind.
  • Being realistic and practical about what we can achieve in a day and avoiding overcommitting does not make us less of a woman but rather promotes our wholeness. We don’t have to be “Wonder Woman,” and it’s okay to say no when necessary to prevent burnout and to accept that we don’t have to do extra to prove our worth.

Understanding and addressing these new digital-related issues that are increasing women’s insecurities requires a multifaceted approach, including promoting digital literacy, creating supportive online communities, and advocating for more inclusive practices in tech industries.

As a woman in this fast-paced digital landscape, it’s okay to admit that you need to seek support to get over any hurts and insecurities that you feel. Overcoming tech-related insecurities can be challenging, but professional help can make a significant difference.

Here are some options to consider:

  • A career coach who specializes in tech can provide guidance on career development, skill enhancement, and overcoming workplace challenges.
  • A mentor you can find in your field can provide invaluable support and advice. Mentors share their experiences, offer guidance, and can help you navigate the complexities of the tech industry.
  • An occasional professional development workshop or training session, focused on building technical skills and soft skills, can boost your confidence. Such programs often include networking opportunities, which can also help reduce feelings of isolation.
  • A support group for women in tech can provide a sense of community and shared understanding. Support groups offer emotional support, practical advice, and a platform to share experiences.
  • An online program to bolster your skills on various tech topics is a great morale booster. Enhancing your skills through these courses can help you feel more competent and confident in your abilities.
  • A mindfulness activity like meditation, yoga, or stress management techniques can help you manage anxiety and build resilience.
  • A therapist or counselor can help you explore the root causes of your insecurities, develop strategies to build confidence, and address negative thought patterns.

Women’s insecurities about tech-related matters are more common than any of us may believe, but nothing to be ashamed of.
