Prayers and Bible Verses for Abandonment
Texas Christian Counseling
To truly understand your feelings, it is important to identify instances of abandonment in your life. These could be things that go back a long time to when you were young or they could be more recent. Sometimes abandonment even occurs before you were born. If you were unwanted or a parent left before you were born, you can still experience the effects of abandonment in your life.
What is Abandonment?
In the plainest terms, abandonment is when you are left by another person. This seemingly simple act can create a domino effect of feelings and issues that you deal with long after the person is gone.
As a believer, you can look beyond the issues and feelings you are left with to focus on the truth God provides. The Bible is full of help for people who have experienced abandonment. Consider the following Bible verses for abandonment issues.
Bible Verses for Abandonment Issues
You will never be forgotten.
If you have experienced abandonment, it is easy to think that you will be forgotten. This is especially true when you face something challenging. In Isaiah, Zion feared being forgotten by God. But they were reminded of the truth:
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. – Isaiah 49:15-16, NIV
Prayer: Lord, help me understand that You will never forget me. Help me feel confident that even if the people who were supposed to love me abandoned me, You have me engraved in the palms of Your hands. Amen
God always welcomes you.
When you are abandoned, it is common to feel unwanted. You may wonder if people truly want to stay around and welcome you. No matter what you have experienced in life from people, God always welcomes you.Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. – Psalm 27:10, NIV
Prayer: Father, sometimes I don’t feel welcome by the people in my life. I worry that no one wants me around. Help me believe that You always welcome me. You always receive me, no matter what anyone else does. Amen
People may leave, but God will not.
You may not be able to change how people in your life have let you down and abandoned you. But you can be confident that God will not abandon or disappoint you. He is always present, always faithful, and always stays. No matter who leaves you in the world, God promises that He never will.
Prayer: God, I have seen people that were supposed to stay choose to leave. I want to believe Your promise to always be with me, but it feels hard. Help me declare Your never-ending presence in my life with confidence. Amen“…the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” – Joshua 31:6, NIV
You never go alone.
When you have a history of abandonment in your life, it isn’t surprising to think that you have to get by on your own. You may have experienced hard situations that you had to get through independently because someone left you to fend for yourself. Or you may have learned to rely solely on yourself so you wouldn’t be let down or disappointed.
The good news is that you don’t need to go alone. God promises to always go with you. You don’t have to worry about Him leaving you.
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” – Deuteronomy 31:8, NIV
Prayer: Lord, show me that You will always go before me and stay with me. Help me feel Your presence. Show me how to rest in the truth that I no longer have to be afraid because You will never leave me or forsake me. Amen
