The Enneagram and Bipolar Personality Disorder

Bipolar DisorderIndividual CounselingPersonal Development

When an individual deals with personality and mental health struggles, it can feel overwhelming. Those who experience the extreme mood changes of bipolar personality disorder often find it helpful to understand basic personality patterns to see how bipolar personality disorder may express itself in different personality types.

One tool that helps us understand personality types is the Enneagram. It is a system that helps explain nine personality types and shows what motivates the individuals of those types. Knowing your personality type can help you be mindful of vulnerabilities and also use your strengths. It can be used to help you self-reflect and grow.

Some individuals get confused about what their natural personality is and what a mental health issue is. Understanding the differences is key to getting the right treatment and feeling better in the long term. Knowing who they are naturally and how mental health affects them plays an important role in healing and getting better. God desires for us to be whole and healthy, no matter what we face.

The Enneagram and Bipolar Personality Disorder

Bipolar personality disorder causes individuals to have heightened mood swings, depending on energy levels. They experience mania during high-energy times and depression during low-energy times. These mood swings can cause chaos in relationships and daily life. Many individuals are affected by bipolar personality disorders. The symptoms are unique for each person.

Knowing your Enneagram number might help in understanding how your personality types may cope with or specifically exhibit bipolar symptoms.

For each Enneagram type, there are specific fears and wants that can combine with bipolar symptoms in different ways. Here are some examples:

  • A type four’s biggest fear is being ordinary. This fear could worsen during sad times.
  • A type eight’s need to be in control could show up differently during mood episodes.

Understanding personality through the Enneagram helps with understanding patterns that stay the same even when mental health symptoms change. Bipolar personality disorder affects how well an individual controls their mood. The basic personality is the foundation for understanding their response to treatment.

Being able to accept that they are uniquely designed can help them notice when bipolar personality disorder is conflicting with normal patterns.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well. Psalm 139:14, NIV

Enneagram Types and Bipolar Patterns

People with bipolar disorder, personality disorders, or mood problems may be more often in some Enneagram types than others. Enneagram types Four, Six, and Eight often show patterns that can overlap with bipolar symptoms, though any type can be affected by this condition.

Type Fours

Individuals in this type are known as “The Individualists.” They naturally feel emotions strongly. They often struggle with feeling sad or overly excited. These individuals have the main goal of finding themselves and feeling special. This often creates internal pressure.

When combined with the tendencies of bipolar patterns, this can cause depressive and manic episodes to be more intense. The pattern of wanting what they don’t have and not appreciating what they do have can become extreme during the episodes.

Type Sixes

Those who are a Type Six Enneagram are called “The Loyalist.” These individuals naturally feel anxious and often experience an internal conflict between security and doubt. When this is combined with bipolar personality disorder, the Six’s natural worry becomes overwhelming during a depressive phase, while the rebellious behavior may be more intense during the manic episode.

Type Eights

Individuals who are an Enneagram Type Eight are identified as “The Challenger.” These individuals tend to operate with a high intensity and may struggle to recognize when their energy levels become unhealthy. They have an intense fear of being controlled or vulnerable. This fear makes it hard for them to accept help during bipolar episodes and causes recovery to take longer.

Understanding how each type moves between healthy and unhealthy stages can help with managing bipolar symptoms more effectively. Christian counselors can use this information to create faith-integrated plans for those who struggle with bipolar disorder.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:6, NIV

Christian Counseling Approaches Using Enneagram for Bipolar Support

The Enneagram and Bipolar Personality DisorderChristian counselors know the value of including personality understanding in mental health treatment. When assisting individuals who have bipolar personality disorder, Christian counselors can use the Enneagram as a framework for understanding their basic personality. This approach doesn’t replace medical treatment, but it does present an understanding of basic personality and mood disorders. This creates whole-person therapy.

This approach is initiated by helping individuals understand their healthy patterns versus stress reactions based on Enneagram type. This is vital for individuals with bipolar personality disorder, as it will help them recognize early warning signs of episodes. An individual who is a Type Four can tell the difference between their natural tendency toward sadness, and a Type Eight can recognize when the intensity is crossing from natural to mania.

Christian counselors often include prayer and scripture with the Enneagram insights to create a complete faith-based approach to healing. Through this approach, they can help the individual identify specific biblical truths that connect with their types. This will give individuals the ability to find spiritual strength during mood changes.

These approaches can be adjusted based on the individual’s need for trust and healing. Some types need a confrontation while others need gentle encouragement. By personalizing the approach to managing bipolar symptoms, individuals can see quicker progress. This incorporates getting help through various means while understanding that God is the ultimate healer.

Heal me, LORD, and I will be healed; save me, and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise. – Jeremiah 17:14, NIV

Practical Applications for Healing

Individuals with bipolar personality disorder can benefit from strategies that consider their personality. This means each Enneagram type can develop specific practices that complement their personality and support mood stability. Type Fours may benefit from creative activities that help with processing emotions, and Type Eights may need high-energy exercise to provide a healthy outlet for intensity.

A support system becomes more effective when personality differences are understood and respected. Family members and friends who learned how to offer support based on personalities can be a good source of encouragement for individuals who suffer from bipolar disorders. This includes understanding when someone needs consistent reassurance and when someone needs assistance to stay focused.

Another vital role for recovery is Christian communities. By offering spiritual support and practical help, churches can create more effective support groups and care ministries. When Christian counselors work with individuals and faith communities, they create a support network better equipped to provide appropriate help.

Bipolar personality disorder involves learning to work with rather than against an individual’s personality while managing the bipolar symptoms. This will include accepting certain Enneagram types will always feel emotions more intensely. It would also involve understanding that some types need more structure in the treatment, while others need flexibility.

Support for Bipolar Personality Disorder

By combining the understanding of Enneagram types with an understanding of bipolar personality disorder, treatments can offer hope to those who struggle with bipolar episodes. They can find hope for a more personalized and effective healing approach.

Understanding the connection between personality and mental health provides a valuable tool for the individual and their support system. Christian counselors can create faith-based treatment plans based on psychological insights and spiritual truth.

Managing bipolar personality disorder is an ongoing journey that benefits from understanding these approaches and having continuous support.
