Healing by Faith: Finding Support from a Christian Counselor in Texas
Dr. Barbara Orticelli
As Christians, why do we claim, embrace, and take ownership over what does not belong to us, including sicknesses, illnesses, diseases, and afflictions? I hear and see many commercials on prescribed medications for diseases and infections, and people say “my” as if it were theirs to embrace and hold onto.
I watched a commercial with a woman singing about Type II diabetes as if it was set up as a musical or play from Broadway. Why is she celebrating the disease as a joyous occasion? This is often the worldly normality of life for those diagnosed with a sickness or disease.
Instead, I offer an alternate challenge: Let’s be mindful of what we say and change how we speak. Proverbs 18:21 (AMP) says, “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” We must watch our language when discussing things that are not part of Yahweh’s plan. Let’s speak positively! Bad health, disease, and decay were not originally intended for Yahweh’s people.
When illness strikes, it’s a reminder of our human vulnerability, encouraging us to turn to Christ the Messiah for strength, who can restore our health (Jeremiah 30:17). Diseases and sicknesses were not created for us to keep, so why do we claim them as ours?
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “healing” means to be free from injury or disease, to make sound or whole, to restore health, and to make well again. We should treat Yahweh’s Scriptures like medicine, nourishing our souls, as they can bring healing. His healing can be instantaneous (Psalm 107:20). Do you believe in the Heavenly Father’s Word over the adverse reports that could harm you? Let’s stand firmly on our foundation of faith and believe in the Most High’s Word.
My Testimony of Healing

Revisiting the pain and the “new normal” I needed to embrace was challenging. However, it’s worth it to me if it will help you through your healing journey and to help you realize that Yahweh is who He says He is in your life!
Psalm 66:16 says, “Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul” (ESV). My testimony reflects the goodness and grace of my Father in heaven, and I hope it blesses you with a healing victory.
In 2019, as I was getting ready to go roller skating with my daughter before she left for the Navy, I discovered a lump on the left side of my breast. I was devastated to learn a couple of months later that it was Stage IV breast cancer. At that point, I felt alone because my daughter was in boot camp. It was disheartening to realize that my health was under attack, but I believe that a divine intervention saved my life.
My pastor and his wife visited to give me daily encouragement. Their support caused a shift in my spiritual thinking and reminded me of my belonging. I began to change my narrative, believing that I was the exception to the rule. Miraculously, the cancer disappeared in less than three months.
After five years of healing, I can confidently say that I will never look back. Facing the diagnosis of a leading cause of death for women left me feeling incredibly alone. My world was turned upside down, or so I thought. However, God intervened at that moment! I continue to claim victory over my life daily despite the attempts of some student doctors, nurses, and others to instill fear in me by using intimidating words. They warned me that the cancer could return if I didn’t do specific procedures, lab work, or take their prescribed medications, but leaning on my Father continued to save me.
Most women don’t survive Stage IV breast cancer, and they certainly cannot say they never had to undergo chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, a hysterectomy, or having their breasts removed after such a grim diagnosis. I never had to go through those procedures because my healing came quickly, and I will always give credit to Yahweh, my Savior and healer.
I was told that surviving this disease and affliction might not be possible, but I did; not only did I survive, but I am also thriving. A secular doctor and nurse advised me to get my affairs in order, as I didn’t have much time to live. However, here I am!
Christian Counseling and Prayer for Healing
Let’s discuss the practices and principles to incorporate into your healing journey through counseling and prayer. My healing journey didn’t take years but months and a few weeks; nonetheless, it wasn’t an easy road. It continues to be challenging, but His strength lives in me and in you, too!
When trials and tribulations come, we can trust in the Lord and speak life over our bodies and minds. Though Yahweh never promised that His people would not face afflictions, we have the source to overcome them.
Two Scriptures come to mind that emphasize going through tribulations:
2 Timothy 3:12 (ESV) says, “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted . . .”
John 15:19 (ESV) says, “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.”
With the help of Christian counseling, we can walk together to discuss additional Scriptures that align with the wisdom of the Father regarding your healing journey and the bigger picture for your life. Let’s embark on that journey of healing.
